Body-worn cameras have become one of the most important tools in modern policing — not just for transparency, but for investigations, evidence collection, and courtroom testimony.
On this episode of Forensics Talks, I’ll be speaking with Bryan Chiles, Senior Manager of Axon Forensics, about how Axon body cameras are helping shape the future of law enforcement. Bryan has been with the company since 2005 and has played a key role in developing and testing both TASERs and body-worn cameras. Today, he serves as an expert witness in cases involving Axon technologies and works closely with legal and forensic teams around the world.
We’ll talk about how Axon cameras handle authentication, SHA256 hashing, chain of custody, automatic activation, and more — and why these technical features matter when it comes to reconstructing events, reviewing use of force, and building solid cases.

I'm starting to think more about

So my current role as senior
manager of Axon Forensics,

I think it was a couple of years ago
when I was on before, and I was,

But, overall, now I have a team.

Before, I was a one man team,
so now I'm a two person team,

So and how it's evolved over time.

Well, let's talk about the,
the transition of

or the, the cameras and how they've sort
of, grown or changed.

So, for example, if we roll the clock
back to 2005, when you first started,

were you primarily working on tasers

back then, or were you also heavily
into the body camera stuff?

Well, we didn't

have body cameras yet at that point,
but we did have cameras.

So, when I started in 2005, Taser

cam was a project
and R&D wasn't released yet.

I think we came out with it in 2006,

but that was the camera that mounted
on the bottom of a taser weapon.

And then after a lot of field use,
I well, even then in 2005,

we were talking about body cameras,
how to record these incidents

because we knew
that would be really good evidence.

One thing we learned on Taser
cams is a lot of officers

don't aim their Taser at a person
till they're ready to deploy.

So we got a lot of recordings of boots
00:05:12:10 - 00:05:15:25
and, you know,
a lot of ground shots and boot shots.
00:05:15:28 - 00:05:22:17
And so, in 2009 was I think it was 2009
when we came out

with our first actual body camera
that they would wear on their body.

That was, we call it Axon Pro.

Had a big computer.

Actually, I have one of them here
on a plaque on the wall,

but it was like a computer screen
that would fit on their belt.

which was a camera that could mount on,

And then there was a call for,
body camera

that would actually mount on the body
because sometimes an officer, you know,

than what's going on.

And so, camera on their head

only, sometimes wasn't a good option.

You know, we wanted
them to have all the tools available,

or a head mount or lapel mount or whatnot.

So, and then we came out
with a body camera.

We built these cameras to be customizable.

And so whatever the customer needs,
if they are worried about storage,

and different things.

Can you explain more or less
how somebody can initiate

whether it's, a conscious or unconscious?

So in the beginning,

we started with, the camera turns on
and it goes into buffering mode.

but in the first versions it was just

So we wanted ways for them to be able

to start recording
without them having to think about it.

So now fast forward to now
we have, multiple sensors

which, can it sends a wireless signal

and any cameras that are
within the reach of that wireless signal.

And if they're configured to do so,
those automatically start recording

when that signal is received.

we have our signal sidearm

to show what was happening

They can customize it
to different triggers like airbag,

Even our fleet cameras are, what we call
dash cameras are fleet systems.

So we want to take,

pack called the ESP.

That battery pack allowed the
the wireless signal to go,

but with Taser seven and Taser ten,
we've built that into the weapon.

And so when the weapons arm it sends that
signal, there's also customization,

that they can configure
what their cameras, will start to.

So you can have a ton of false alarms
depending on environment.

So they can configure their cameras to
respond to, you know, certain triggers.

We can turn it off so it doesn't turn on

is probably the biggest thing
